al dente: Pasta & Design

No one was ever satisfied with a single noodle, which is why macaroni, rigatoni and spaghetti were produced in large quantities early on. Industrially manufactured and served to the hungry masses: There are no limits to the variety of shapes. The exhibition “al dente. Pasta & Design” explores the creative dimensions of pasta.

At the centre are the questions: How does pasta get its shape? And what do people do with it? Each pasta shape requires special equipment and so the exhibition includes modern machines and traditional tools that are important in the shaping process. But it’s not just the pasta that needs to be designed, but also its consumption. In fact, the fork itself was invented to avoid burning your fingers when eating pasta. Graphic design has also played an important role in the history of pasta. Through posters, visuals and innovative packaging, graphic designers have contributed to the rise of pasta as a global food.
